L-苯丙氨酸是一种基本氨基酸。它参与许多神经递质，比如多巴胺，肾上腺素，去甲肾上腺素，I-DOPA（二羟基苯丙氨酸），黑色素和甲状腺素的合成。L-苯丙氨酸代谢同样会生成苯基乙胺，在大脑内产生兴奋剂效果，加强情绪。[3]
